Effective Appraisals

Appraisals or performance interviews are a key element of performance management and the right skills and attitudes are required to ensure a successful outcome.   This course provides anyone required to carry out such interviews with the skills and techniques to help them conduct effective appraisals. 

The course will enable participants to: 

  • Understand what should and should not be covered in an appraisal.
  • Plan, prepare for and carry out an appraisal meeting to ensure the time is well spent
  • Learn how to set an objective and apply this within an appraisal setting, and how to get commitment to the objectives.
  • Manage the output from an appraisal.
  • Consider how appraisees can be helped to better understand the process and reasons for appraisals.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the purpose of appraisals, and the pitfalls to be avoided
  • Understand what topics are appropriate to an appraisal and why
  • Demonstrate how to plan, prepare for and carry out an appraisal
  • Effectively draw up a meaningful objective and explain how to gain commitment to making these happen
  •  Explain how to help appraisees to understand the process and to take an active part in it.
